A Canadian passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing Friday in Grand Forks after experiencing electrical problems.

WestJet Airlines Flight 1578 was traveling from Calgary, Alta., to Chicago O'Hare International Airport when it made a diversion into Grand Forks, according to FlightView.com, which tracks air travel.

The plane landed at about 5 p.m. and was greeted by the Airport Fire Department and other first responders, but did not appear to have any major problems.

The plane was brought from the runway to the terminal area, where airport employees brought passengers water and snacks. Passengers onboard did not deplane.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Flight 1578 from Calgary to Chicago diverted to Grand Forks, North Dakota this afternoon after the crew detected an electrical smell in the cabin," WestJet said. "The flight landed normally and there are no injuries to guests or crew. WestJet is sending an aircraft to recover our guests and we expect to have them in Chicago in the next few hours."

There were 118 passengers on the plane, plus crew, WestJet said.

An automated phone service said the flight was expected to reach Chicago at 12:24 a.m. It had been scheduled to land at 7:25 p.m. Friday.
