The holiday season is the perfect time for your family to gather together, reminisce on old times and catch up on what’s new. But let’s face it, we can only take so much. We love our family members, but sometimes you just need to get away from all the craziness that comes with the holidays.

Here’s a list of places you can go to escape from your family, and even a few places open on Christmas Eve.

Nothing says “escape your family” like sneaking out to go to a bar. We’re not saying alcohol is the answer, but we are saying most bars are open until 2 a.m. If you pick this route, choose a bar and grill, like Sidestreet Grille & Pub located in downtown Fargo. That way you can have a drink and enjoy a meal while your family is driving each other nuts at home.

Fryn’ Pan

The Fryn’ Pan Family Restaurant is well-known for serving up hearty meals 24 hours a day. Although those hours are different during the holiday season, you can still sit down at the Fryn’ Pan on Christmas Eve. Order yourself some pancakes or a steak because they will be open until 2 p.m. at their two convenient locations.

Skating rink

Feeling trapped by all your family members? Stuck in a stuffy house surrounded by hot stoves? Grab your ice skates and escape to one of the many outdoor skating rinks of Fargo-Moorhead has to offer. Most elementary schools have their own skating rink open to the public, such as Lincoln Elementary School.

Dog park

If you’re fed up with your family, imagine how your dog feels. All these friendly strangers and your dog still isn’t getting enough attention. Whisk your dog away to an outdoor fenced in dog park. You can find one in Village West Park in South Fargo located by the water tower.

Are you stuck listening to a boring story that you’ve heard four times already? Release all your bottled up energy by hitting the gym. Family Wellness Center will be open until noon on Christmas Eve. Walk the track, lift, swim, play racquetball and avoid hearing that same story for the fifth time.

Coffee shop

The perfect excuse to escape your family members is by heading out for coffee. If you need a caffeine fix on Christmas Eve, Starbucks will be open until 9 p.m.. Try one of their signature holiday drinks like the Toasted White Chocolate Mocha. It’s made with their signature espresso poured over flavored sauce, followed by steamed milk and topped with whipped cream and candied cranberry sugar. (link to holiday drinks article)

The mall

Are your in-laws driving you up the wall and you have some last minute shopping to do? Grab your car keys and head for the mall. The West Acres shopping center will be open it’s regular hours Christmas Eve. Store hours may vary.

Go for a walk

If you can’t escape your family long enough to visit one of the places listed above, go outside and enjoy the crisp air. Take a stroll while looking at the glistening holiday lights and remember that even though your family can drive you crazy, the holidays are a time for gathering.
