Inside Business: Fargo Sylvan Learning Center owner named ND small-businessperson of 2018

FARGO — The owner of Sylvan Learning Center here has been named the state's small-businessperson of the year.

The U.S. Small Business Administration on Thursday, April 26, announced Kari Weigel was chosen as the 2018 North Dakota Small Business Person of the Year.

Weigel, a Bismarck resident, is executive director and owner of Sylvan Learning Center locations in Fargo and Bismarck. She bought the Bismarck business in 2008 and has since expanded to three satellite locations in the state, according to a news release, growing her employee count by about 50 percent.

"Kari Weigel is an outstanding example of the entrepreneurial spirit," SBA North Dakota District Director Alan Haut said in a written statement.

Weigel used an SBA 504 loan to help fund construction of a new building as her business grew. She's also involved with several community organizations as a volunteer.

Small Business Person of the Year winners from each state and U.S. territory will be honored at events in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, April 29, and Monday, April 30. One honoree will be selected as the National Small Business Person of the Year.
